In 1951, the concept was born of providing a Catholic education to children on a seven-acre site located on Hearst Drive in Oglethorpe Estates. Monsignor Joseph Moylan invited the Sisters of Mercy from the Savannah Mother house to come to Atlanta to minister to the educational and spiritual needs of the new Our Lady of the Assumption parish’s children. The school initially enjoyed an enrollment of 176 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
An impressive 71 years later, OLA Catholic School is home to 583 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The physical facility has evolved over the years, and the school transitioned to an all-lay faculty in 1988. However, the philosophy of the Sisters of Mercy remains at the heart of our school’s mission: to create a nurturing environment grounded in the Catholic faith, which provides for the spiritual and academic development of each child.
Each student, parent, and faculty/staff member who has been a part of our OLA community over the past 71 years has contributed to our rich and enduring legacy. We celebrate who we have been, what we are today, and what the future holds for OLA Catholic School.
